Soft Machine are a British band formed in Canterbury in 1966, widely regarded as the founding force of the Canterbury scene - a movement that also spawned Caravan, Gong and Hatfield and the North. Their music shifted from psychedelic rock through progressive rock into jazz-rock fusion, and their 1970 double album Third remains a landmark of the genre. After a long hiatus the band reformed in 2015 under the original name and continues to record and tour, releasing their thirteenth studio album, Thirteen, in March 2026.
