18. Culture at the Kursaal 2026/27
The eighteenth season of the Culture at the Kursaal concert series is a festival of music in all its forms: from Hungarian band Söndörgő through the musical "My Fair Lady" to a tribute to Edith Piaf.
Söndörgő is a Hungarian world music ensemble founded in 1995 in Szentendre, built around three brothers and a cousin from the Eredics family. Their music draws on the South Slavic folk traditions of Serbian and Croatian communities along the Danube, played on the tambura - a plucked lute-family instrument distinct from the violin-led sound of mainstream Hungarian folk. All four Eredics members teach at the Budapest Academy of Music's folk music department, and the band has toured across Europe for three decades, earning consistent recognition from Songlines and fRoots magazines.
Söndörgő released the anniversary album XXX to mark their 30th year, featuring four new studio recordings alongside highlights from three decades of touring.
Budapest's Müpa concert hall named Söndörgő its Ensemble of the Season for 2025, scheduling multiple performances at the venue.
The album Gyezz reached number one on the World Music Charts Europe for September 2024 and simultaneously topped Songlines magazine's Top Of The World chart.
Söndörgő released Gyezz on GroundUP Music (Michael League's label), recorded with jazz saxophonist Chris Potter in under 24 hours.
The band released a collaborative album with the Amsterdam Klezmer Band and has previously recorded with Macedonian saxophonist Ferus Mustafov.
