The Sorcerers are a Leeds-based instrumental group formed around 2015 as the house band of ATA Records, built on the ethio-jazz of 1960s-70s Addis Ababa and filtered through European horror film scores and analogue library music. The core trio of bassist Neil Innes, drummer Joost Hendrickx and multi-instrumentalist Richard Ormrod records exclusively to 2-inch tape at ATA Studios - a converted garage stocked with vintage equipment. Their debut was championed by ethio-jazz pioneer Mulatu Astatke, and the band has since released four studio albums, the latest being Other Worlds and Habitats (July 2025).
The Sorcerers released their fourth studio album, Other Worlds and Habitats, on 11 July 2025 via ATA Records, featuring the return of keyboardist Johnny Richards on Mellotron, Farfisa and Jen 73 piano.
Aquarium Drunkard reviewed Other Worlds and Habitats, noting that Richards' vintage synths give the album "an eerie, sci-fi glow" and describing the result as "thick spacey global jams."
Spectrum Culture published a review of Other Worlds and Habitats, noting the band has "embroidered their influences into their sleeves with greater subtlety" compared to earlier releases.
The Sorcerers released their third album, I Too Am a Stranger, on 9 February 2024 via ATA Records, their first LP in four years, earning praise from BBC Radio 2's Jamie Cullum and Mulatu Astatke.
The Sorcerers issued the 7" single "Kaunas Baltic Connect" on ATA Records in 2024, their first release between the third and fourth albums.
