Tonkünstler-Orchester

About

The Tonkünstler-Orchester Niederösterreich is the state symphony orchestra of Lower Austria, founded in its current form in 1945 and tracing its name to a Viennese ensemble that gave the world premiere of Schoenberg's Gurre-Lieder in 1913. Around 100 musicians perform across five residencies - the Goldener Saal of the Wiener Musikverein, the Festspielhaus St. Pölten, Grafenegg, the Stadttheater Wiener Neustadt, and the Stadttheater Baden - making it the only Austrian symphony orchestra with such a spread of permanent homes. Since the 2025-26 season the orchestra is led by French conductor Fabien Gabel, who succeeded Yutaka Sado after his ten-year tenure.
