Eine Ausstellung des Vitra Design Museums, der Wüstenrot Stiftung und M+, in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Geoffrey Bawa Trust.

Geoffrey Bawa (1919-2003) gehört zu den einflussreichsten Architekten Asiens im 20. Jahrhundert: In über fünfzig Jahren Schaffenszeit realisierte er mehr als 200 Projekte. Sein Werk verbindet modernistische Prinzipien mit regionalen und traditionellen Elementen zu einer Architektursprache, die auf Ort, lokale Materialien und kulturelle Identitäten eingeht. Sein Oeuvre prägte die Architektur des postkolonialen Sri Lanka nachhaltig - Hotels, Privathäuser, Schulen, Universitäten, Fabriken, Bürogebäude und das Parlamentsgebäude des Landes gehören dazu. Heute gilt sein Ansatz weltweit als Vorbild für sozial und ökologisch nachhaltiges Bauen.

Im Herbst 2026 präsentieren das Vitra Design Museum und M+ Hongkong in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Geoffrey Bawa Trust die erste umfassende Retrospektive zu Bawa seit zwei Jahrzehnten. Die Ausstellung beleuchtet zentrale Leitmotive seines Schaffens: interdisziplinäre Zusammenarbeit, ökologisches, soziales und kulturelles Engagement sowie die gestalterische Formensprache, die seine Architektur prägt. Zeichnungen, Modelle, Möbel, Fotografien und Filme vermitteln Bawas Werk in seiner ganzen sinnlichen Breite.

An exhibition by the Vitra Design Museum, M+, and the Wüstenrot Foundation in collaboration with the Geoffrey Bawa Trust.

Geoffrey Bawa (1919-2003) is one of the most influential 20th-century architects in Asia, with a career spanning five decades and over 200 completed projects. His work blends the principles of Modernism with vernacular and traditional elements to form a distinctive architectural language that responds to context, local materials, and cultural identities. Bawa's oeuvre shaped the architecture of postcolonial Sri Lanka across building types - hotels, private residences, schools, universities, factories, office buildings, and the country's parliament. Today his approach is being rediscovered worldwide as a model for socially and ecologically sustainable building.

In 2026, the Vitra Design Museum and M+ Hong Kong, in collaboration with the Geoffrey Bawa Trust, present the first major retrospective on Bawa in two decades. The exhibition foregrounds recurring themes in his work: interdisciplinary collaboration, ecological, social and cultural engagement, and the formal qualities that define his architecture. Drawings, models, furniture, photographs, and films bring the full sensory range of Bawa's legacy into view.
