AND NOW HANAU? What comes after the racially motivated terrorist attack of 19 February 2020 in Hanau - an event that has burned itself into Germany's collective memory? Nine people were murdered in cold blood that evening, killed out of pure racial hatred. Nine lives extinguished by blind fury.

Yet the reconstruction of events raises more questions than it answers. How could an organisational failure of this scale have happened? Why did locked emergency exits make escape impossible for the victims? Why was the emergency call centre understaffed? And why have the public prosecutor's office and the police shown such obvious reluctance to clarify what actually happened?

These are the questions posed by Tuğsal Moğul - playwright, director, actor and physician, born in 1969 in Neubeckum (Westphalia). Together with the Initiative 19. Februar, an organisation of relatives of the victims and survivors, he revisits the events of that night and gives a voice to those directly affected - people who then had to face bureaucratic confusion and xenophobic resentment on top of their grief.

Through a research-based project, Tuğsal Moğul and the Initiative work to bring as much transparency as possible to a completely opaque set of events. By staging reality as documentary theatre, they create a dignified act of remembrance.

At stake is a full account of what happened, a critical examination of how state authorities and the police acted, and the political consequences that must follow. And, above all, justice - for the victims and those they left behind.

AND NOW HANAU seeks to shift the perspective on these events and demands a societal process of reflection and accountability.
