The brilliant physicist Möbius has withdrawn to a luxurious psychiatric sanatorium - he knows that his formulas could ultimately mean the destruction of the world. In the same sanatorium are two other seemingly "mad" men: one believes he is Einstein, the other Isaac Newton. Behind this masquerade lie their true identities as agents of the Western and Eastern secret services, who want to exploit Möbius' discoveries for their respective sides.

Möbius convinces both that there is only one right way: all three must, despite being mentally sound, remain as madmen in the sanatorium to spare the world the terrible consequences of their discoveries.

Against the backdrop of the atomic arms race, Dürrenmatt raises the question of science's responsibility - and concludes that it is irrelevant how an individual behaves: whether he serves politics or refuses to do so, catastrophe is inevitable. The play, which toys with the inversion of madness and reason, was the most frequently performed play on German-language stages in the 1962/63 and 1982/83 seasons and became a worldwide success.
