The Necks

Australian avant-garde jazz trio The Necks was founded in 1987 in Sydney and specializes in expansive improvisation: their pieces unfold over an hour or more, with piano, bass and drums merging into a unified sonic entity.

Microtonal shifts create hypnotic sound textures that blend ambient and minimal music. The Necks draw on the early serial structures of La Monte Young and Steve Reich, translating them into their own sonic language - quiet, meditative, marked by gradually fading musical phrases.
