"Wherever you were born, that's where you belong!" With these words, border officials send the protagonist Ferdinand Havlicek onto the bridge spanning the border river.

Due to a border shift, the birthplace of the expelled man now lies in a different state. However, since he cannot be admitted there due to lack of citizenship, he has no choice but to remain in legal limbo - on the bridge over the border river.

An absurd and bitterly comic tale unfolds about the bureaucracy of nationalism, searching for its happy ending.

Author Ödön von Horváth caricatured his own experiences in this work, after being forced to emigrate in 1933.
