At the heart of the story is a house on a lake in the Mark region: the lives of its inhabitants mirror the political upheavals of the past hundred years in Germany. From the 1920s to today, the house and its residents experience the Weimar Republic, the Third Reich, the war, East Germany, reunification, and the post-reunification era.

Jenny Erpenbeck gives each fate its own form, each unfolding its own drama. Together they create a panorama of the past century - disturbing, joyful, unsettling, and reconciling all at once.
