Too Many Emotions
Everyone knows that psychological puberty kicks in around thirteen. Anyone who thinks it's over by sixteen is sorely mistaken - because at forty-something, I'm right in the thick of it! Sure, an artist needs strong feelings. How else do you write songs that move people? But I clearly have far too many:
There's the urge to save the world, the joy of looking forward to old age, the fear of actually getting old, the wish to poison my dog, the guilt about wishing that, the longing for a grand Hollywood romance, the appetite for casual sex, the craving for high-calorie food, the fierce determination to write a hit, the hollow feeling after years of trying to write that hit, the unconditional love for my child, and the hatred of mothers who are good at crafts.
How do you deal with all of that? How do you filter it? No idea. But I try - through my songs.
Anna Piechotta - chansonnier, cabaret artist, and winner of the Bavarian Cabaret Prize 2023 (music) - searches for her sense of self as a middle-aged woman in her show "Too Many Emotions". Whether she finds it remains to be seen. Funny, sharp, and musical - that much is guaranteed.
