Description was written before the event

Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849): Fantasie in F minor, Op. 49 - Igor Levit, piano
Joseph Haydn (1732-1809): Sonata in A major, Hob. XVI:26 - Dongping Wang, piano
Leopold Godowsky (1870-1938): from "Renaissance"
Ruth Crawford-Seeger (1901-1953): from "Preludes" - Roman Borisov, piano

After a cake break and plenty of conversation, the programme resumes with Dongping Wang's take on Haydn. He plays the A major Sonata, published in 1774 alongside other sonatas - a collection that marked Haydn's first official publication, carefully dedicated to his employer, Prince Esterházy.

Chopin's F minor Fantasie, performed by Igor Levit, shares a similarly sonata-like architecture. Hearing Levit play Chopin is a rare treat. Roman Borisov rounds out the afternoon with music that is romantic in spirit yet rooted in tradition: he pairs pieces from Leopold Godowsky's "Renaissance" cycle with short "Preludes" by Ruth Crawford-Seeger, works that shift between impressionism and atonality.
