"Selbstregulierung des Herzens" (Self-Regulation of the Heart) paints a wide-ranging portrait of life in the GDR and the newly reunified Germany. At its centre are Georg, who initially hopes to push his country forward with the help of early computers and cybernetics, and the artist Mona.

Around them, a rich cast of characters takes shape: Roland, a disillusioned intellectual who flees to the West; Marlies, who tries to reform the system from within; and Mona's circle of artist friends. They all converge in a village near Wandlitz, where strange, secretive construction work soon begins.

With quiet force, Peggy Mädler writes about the tension between stability and dissolution - about closeness and estrangement, adaptation and resilience.
