Concert Lounge for the First Symphony Concert - Brahms' 1st Symphony - Conductor & Host: GMD Jochem Hochstenbach

An evening of conversation and music devoted to Brahms's First Symphony takes place in Trier on Wednesday, 16 September 2026 at 19:30 at Theater Trier. Generalmusikdirektor Jochem Hochstenbach conducts the Philharmonic Orchestra of the City of Trier and leads a discussion about the genesis of this monumental work. Brahms took an exceptionally long time to complete his first symphony - critics immediately hailed it as the "Tenth of Beethoven" after its premiere, the highest accolade of the era. The evening explores why the composer hesitated so long before finishing the piece and whether his doubts were justified. Theater Trier is a municipal theatre in a 1964 building at Augustinerhof with a main hall seating approximately 650. Admission is 12 euros. Hochstenbach has one further German date - 17 September at the same venue.
