Description was written before the event

Brahms took an unusually long time to complete his First Symphony - after the premiere, critics promptly crowned it "Beethoven's 10th", which at the time was considered the highest possible praise.

Why he wrestled with the work for so long, and whether the hesitation was worth it, is the subject of this talk-concert with GMD Jochem Hochstenbach and the Philharmonic Orchestra of the City of Trier.
