Max and Martin run a business together in America until Martin returns to his German homeland in 1932. In the USA, the Jewish Max worries about his sister, who works as a young actress in Berlin - while Martin in Germany increasingly becomes a supporter and beneficiary of the rising regime. Tensions escalate, catastrophe strikes, and Max makes a decision that gives the story a completely unexpected turn.
