A condensate forms when matter transitions between states - evaporation, compression, densification. These words justify the trio's name and describe music that deliberately breaks free from orthodox jazz doctrine: sometimes rocky and punchy, sometimes melodic and balladic, generated through new media in new contexts.
GEBHARD ULLMANN brings decades of experience with modified sounds - his soprano and tenor saxophones wind through dense textures, float in airy space, or strike with precision. Oliver Potratz's electric bass can be dark and menacing, providing solid grounding, or soar into beautiful lines - at times powerful, at times delicate. Eric Schaefer's drumming as forceful, urgent, and dynamic would be an understatement - he ranks among Europe's finest percussionists.
From the trio's established interplay grew the idea of expanding the band's vocabulary through guest musicians. LIZ KOSACK (d/usa) - synthesizer player and makeup artist - proved an ideal complement with her futuristic, decidedly non-jazz keyboard cascades. The musical territory DAS KONDENSAT explores can barely be compared to anything but late-sixties krautrock - yet that captures only one aspect of a band that integrates dub, ambient, microtonality, free jazz, and contemporary classical music into a whole that exceeds the sum of its parts.
