A documentary film about American painter James McNeill Whistler, created on the occasion of the first major Whistler retrospective in three decades at Tate Britain. Whistler is best known for his painting "Arrangement in Grey and Black: Portrait of the Painter's Mother" (1871) - better known as "Whistler's Mother".

As a contemporary of the Impressionists, admired by Van Gogh and Manet, Whistler broke with Victorian conventions and consistently pursued the ideal of "art for art's sake". He saw a parallel between painting and music, and titled many of his works as "Arrangements", "Harmonies", or "Nocturnes" to emphasize the tonal qualities of his visual language.

The retrospective at Tate Britain brings together world-renowned masterpieces with rarely exhibited works. The film accompanies this exhibition and reveals the artist behind the most famous painting in art history.
