The history of Saxony and Dresden under National Socialism has been widely researched - yet the garden city of Hellerau is often a blind spot in that story. The northern part of Dresden, however, was far from untouched between 1933 and 1945.

This tour explores what changed in Hellerau during those years, what was built, and what fate befell the Festspielhaus.

HELLERAU - Europäisches Zentrum der Künste is a historic arts centre in the garden city of Hellerau, Dresden's first garden city district. The Festspielhaus, built in 1911 by Heinrich Tessenow, was originally home to the Dalcroze Institute and became a pioneering stage for rhythm, dance and theatrical reform in early 20th-century Europe. Today it hosts contemporary dance, performance, theatre and interdisciplinary festivals, drawing artists and companies from across the continent.
