On the occasion of the premiere of his new book "Don't Be Outraged!" (Ullstein), Omid Nouripour discusses with Michel Friedman ways to escape the state of permanent outrage and social polarization.
Fifteen years after Stéphane Hessel's manifesto "Be Outraged!", outrage has become a permanent condition - on social media and in talk shows, major political questions are debated with the same intensity as banalities. There is little room for nuanced answers. The result: social division instead of cohesion, culture wars instead of solutions. Nouripour, a professional expert in compromise, calls for an end to the culture of outrage - whether it concerns migration and identity, climate, wars, or the welfare state.
Omid Nouripour was born in 1975 in Tehran and came to Germany at age 13 with his family. Since 2006 he has been a member of the German Bundestag, today its vice president; from 2022 to 2024 he was co-chair of Alliance 90/The Greens. Michel Friedman was born in 1956 in Paris and is a lawyer, philosopher, publicist, and moderator as well as an honorary professor at Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences. He is a recipient of the French Order "Officer of the Legion of Honour" (2000), the Federal Cross of Merit (2001), and the Goethe Medal of the City of Frankfurt am Main (2024).
