Shakespeare's dramas are far from unmusical works: numerous songs are woven into the plots, which in those days were sung rather than recited. Canadian Ross W. Duffin has compiled these melodies from Shakespeare's era in a single songbook.
The Württemberg Chamber Choir brings them to life together with Ricarda Hornych on the lute. Under the direction of Lukas Grimm, the historical songs are set alongside compositions from our time - with texts not only from the dramas but also from the famous sonnets. The compositions come from, among others, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Frank Martin, Nils Lindberg, Huw Watkins, John Tavener and Owain Park.
