Money. Greed. Power. - The Cum Ex Case
Stadttheater Peiner Festsäle, Germany
A play by Stefan Zimmermann
A production of a.gon Theater GmbH Munich
Starring Lara Joy Körner, Max Volkert Martens and others.
On New Year's Eve 2012, bank employee Lena confides in her husband that certain transactions at her bank seem suspicious to her. Their mutual friend Lambert, a tax lawyer by profession, explains the situation: the "Cum-Ex" business model has long been standard practice at many banks and funds - the state is systematically robbed of billions out of pure greed. Lambert himself was involved and wants to get out.
Lena decides to take action. Her husband and best friend Carla want to support her - but it soon becomes clear that the architects of this scheme have excellent connections and maintain relationships all the way to the highest circles. Lena and her friends don't give up and use decoys and hidden cameras to expose the fraud.
The mechanics of Cum-Ex transactions are drawn from reality: billions in tax revenue were embezzled by wealthy private individuals, financial advisors, lawyers, and international stock traders. It took many years before the loopholes were closed internationally, and numerous investigations continue to this day. Director Stefan Zimmermann harnesses the freedom of theatre to craft a gripping and entertaining political thriller - without directly attacking the real people involved.
