PREMIERE

November 9, 1989 marked a turning point in German history: after 28 years, the wall erected by the East German regime in 1961 came down. Alongside joy and relief on both sides came great uncertainty - many East German citizens were poorly prepared for a social market economy, and alongside new opportunities came bitter disappointments.

Thomas Lukow from Berlin illuminates in his multimedia lecture, drawing on documents and intensive research, what the fall of the wall meant for people in East and West, how politics operated in both parts of Germany, which catalysts and protagonists contributed to the wall's collapse - and how German unity is perceived today.

Thomas Lukow was a long-time freelance contributor to the Stasi Museum Normannenstraße and the Federal Chancellery in Berlin.
