About: Pietro Mascagni

A baker's son from Livorno who became one of opera's most celebrated names, Mascagni transformed the genre in 1890 with Cavalleria rusticana - a compact Sicilian tragedy that won the Sonzogno competition and went on to define an entire aesthetic movement. His Intermezzo from that opera remains one of the most recognisable pieces in the classical repertoire.
