Cavalleria rusticana is a one-act opera by Italian composer Pietro Mascagni, premiered in 1890 and regarded as a founding work of operatic verismo. The libretto is based on a short story by Giovanni Verga and depicts a tale of jealousy, infidelity, and tragic revenge in a Sicilian village. The opera is celebrated for its emotionally charged music, particularly its orchestral intermezzo.
