Born 22 July 1946 in Avignon, Mireille Mathieu is a French chanson vocalist whose international career began with a 1965 television debut and subsequent success at the Paris Olympia. She has recorded over 1,200 songs across eleven languages during her six-decade career, achieving global record sales of more than 122 million units. Her strong, crystalline voice invited immediate parallels with Édith Piaf and established her as a major figure in Germany, Russia and Central Europe.

The Alte Oper Frankfurt is a grand 19th-century concert hall on Opernplatz, rebuilt after its near-total destruction in World War II and reopened in 1981.
