Half a year after the peace ending the Seven Years' War, Minna von Barnhelm sets out from Thuringia to Berlin - accompanied by her maid Franziska and her uncle. She is searching for her missing fiancé, Major von Tellheim, who as an officer of the Prussian occupiers was tasked with collecting war taxes in her Saxon homeland. Rather than bleeding the defeated country dry, however, he extended a loan from his own pocket - and is now dishonourably discharged for it.

Tellheim is at odds with himself and the world, withdrawing from life. His friend, Sergeant Werner, tries to support him both financially and morally.

By chance, the very inn where Tellheim has taken lodgings with his loyal servant Just is where Minna and Franziska end up stranded after their carriage axle breaks. Minna is overjoyed to find her fiancé alive - but Tellheim sees no future in an engagement made in better times. Armed with a woman's wiles and the quick-tongued Franziska at her side, Minna fights for her Tellheim.
