Wiener Johann Strauss Orchester / Johannes Wildner — Elbphilharmonie, Hamburg

The unique Wiener Johann Strauss Orchester has continued the artistic legacy of the legendary Vienna Strauss Orchestra since 1966, after it was dissolved in New York by Eduard Strauss I in 1901.

Edward Strauss II, grandson and last professional musician of the Strauss dynasty, revived the idea of the family orchestra by founding the Wiener Johann Strauss Orchester. Since then, the orchestra has performed worldwide, presenting the works of the Strauss dynasty - above all the solemn melodies of their artistic predecessors, both "Waltz Kings", Johann Strauss (the Elder) and Johann Strauss (the Younger).

Playing in this traditional orchestra is a great honour. The musicians of the Wiener Johann Strauss Orchester are members of Austria's leading orchestras, including the Vienna Symphony, Bruckner Orchestra Linz, Tonkünstlerorchester Niederösterreich, Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, and Graz Philharmonic.

The orchestra will be conducted by Johannes Wildner, a former member of the Vienna Philharmonic and one of Austria's most distinguished conductors, who collaborates with many renowned orchestras including Arena di Verona, Prague State Opera, London Philharmonic, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Dresden Philharmonic, Vienna Symphony, and Tokyo Philharmonic.

The concert programme at Elbphilharmonie Hamburg features the spirited melodies of the Strauss dynasty, such as the Viennese waltz "An der schönen blauen Donau" by Johann Strauss (the Younger). Approximately 200 years after the Viennese waltz spread from the musical city of Vienna to the world, in 2017 the Viennese waltz was recognised as an intangible UNESCO World Cultural Heritage.
