It's 2025. Retro waves keep crashing in, one after another. Synth-pop is bigger than ever, and productions worldwide are drawing on the sound of pre-reunification Germany.
So what are the originals - the bands and artists of that era - up to today? Many are doing the rounds as nostalgic fixtures at local-radio eighties parties; others have ploughed their old royalties into organic vegetable farming. Not Camouflage. Yes, that Camouflage. The masters of melancholy dressed in electronic song. The band that in 1987 swept from Bietigheim-Bissingen straight into the US charts with music that brilliantly fused the cool of Kraftwerk, the pop sensibility of OMD, and the brooding darkness of Depeche Mode.
Their debut album "Voices & Images" scored on both sides of the Atlantic - in the US they even hit number one on the Billboard Dance Charts. The follow-up, "Methods of Silence", kept the momentum going, and the single "Love Is A Shield" turned out to be a gem of a hit that still moves dancefloors and radio stations around the world.
A lot has happened on this planet since then, and the band has travelled a long road - anything but a straight one. Through the nineties they played with styles and producers, chasing the experiment. They founded "Areu Areu", a label for the offbeat; an opera project crashed spectacularly into a wall. Artistically important, financially disastrous - in equal measure. Meanwhile the labels backed faster horses. That's showbusiness too, the band figured, dusted themselves off, kept recording regardless, toured the world from Russia to Mexico, and steadily grew their fanbase.
Camouflage can be counted on. They don't rest, they don't just live...
