Douglas Stuart presents his novel "John of John" as part of the Lange Nacht der Literatur (Long Night of Literature).

Life on the Outer Hebrides is hard, the landscape unforgiving, and there is little room for being different. John-Calum Macleod, known as Cal, has left his father John's croft to study in Edinburgh. Now he is back - ragged, broke, carrying a bin bag stuffed with elegantly self-sewn clothes. His father has summoned him home to help with the tweed weaving. That is what the men here have done for centuries: weave and pray. Father and son, as much strangers to each other as they are alike, remain locked in silence.

Scottish author Douglas Stuart worked as a fashion designer in New York before turning to writing. His debut novel "Shuggie Bain" won the Booker Prize in 2020. "John of John" was translated by Sophie Zeitz.
