Isaiah Collier celebrates John Coltrane — hr-Sendesaal - Hessischer Rundfunk, Frankfurt

Isaiah Collier | saxophone
John Beasley | conductor

To mark John Coltrane's 100th birthday, the hr-Bigband presents an evening with Isaiah Collier - the young Chicago saxophonist whose playing is steeped in Coltrane's musical spirit. The programme features Coltrane's landmark suite "A Love Supreme" in Jim McNeely's arrangement, alongside Collier's own music in new arrangements by two-time Grammy winner John Beasley.

Collier launched his career in Ernest Dawkins' Young Masters Quartet before forming his own band. Like Coltrane, he places the spiritual at the centre of his music: his albums revolve around faith, conviction, wisdom and African-American cultural heritage. He already won over Frankfurt audiences at the Deutschen Jazzfestival with his band "Chosen Few".

John Beasley earned both of his Grammys for Best Arrangement. The pair's joint album "Returning to Forever" received a further Grammy nomination last year.

"A Love Supreme" was composed in 1964 as a suite and recorded in a single session. It remains one of the enduring masterpieces of jazz.
