ACH JOTT, WAT SIND DIE MÄNNER DUMM!
A Rendezvous with Claire Waldoff
With: Jeannette Urzendowsky alias Chanson-Nette (acting, vocals) and Tal Balshai (piano)
Jeannette Urzendowsky alias Chanson-Nette, whom audiences may know from "Ich hätt' getanzt heut Nacht" and "Warum nur hold und schön und rein…?" on this stage, is a true Berlin original from the Friedrichshain neighbourhood.
This time, together with Tal Balshai at the piano, she takes the audience back to the era when Claire Waldoff became a legend.
Already in the late imperial period, "die Waldoff" was an icon of the unconventional; in the mid-1920s she belted out "Raus mit den Männern aus'm Reichstag". Long before it was fashionable, she sang about feminism and free love, earning a reputation as a rebel, cabaret queen and Berlin street kid - despite originally hailing from Gelsenkirchen.
Expect chansons such as "Ach Jott, wat sind die Männer dumm!", "Die Großstadtpflanze" and "Das Dornröschen vom Wedding", woven together with stories from Claire Waldoff's life - a life that was fundamentally upended by the rise of National Socialism.
A tribute to Claire Waldoff, and an evening against forgetting.
