Misterioso - Biber meets Piazzolla | Opening Concert
Stadthaus Lutherstadt Wittenberg, Germany

Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber, one of the great violin masters of the 17th century, tells the "Holy Mysteries" of the Rosary in his 15 sonatas through highly virtuosic musical imagery. The sensuality and aesthetics of the Baroque spring from a rapture of faith - the bond between God and man, which in those days was still deeply intertwined with physical sensuality. That is precisely the parallel with tango, which carries an almost religious gravity of its own and celebrates the physical sensuality between man and woman.
In the Mystery Sonatas, one can hear an act of love through the Holy Spirit; in Astor Piazzolla's Tango Nuevo, hearts beat and blood rushes. Both compositional styles stir feelings that music transforms into sound. Centuries separate them, yet human emotion has remained the same.
With Baroque instruments, tango becomes even more human and alive. The boundaries dissolve quickly - and in the end, it no longer matters which style or which era you are in.
