Schwarz & Rubey - Das Restaurant
Stadttheater Aschaffenburg, Germany
18.2 €
Two Austrian actors - known from productions such as "Eberhoferkrimis" and "Braunschlag" - have struck a deal: Simon Schwarz, despite chronic stage fright, takes the plunge onto the stage and writes and performs a cabaret show together with Manuel Rubey. In return, Manuel breaks his vow never to be part of a podcast where two guys ramble on about life, the universe and everything. Well, now they've both made their bed.
Between them, they have at least four left hands. Yet both friends think it's a brilliant idea to open a restaurant. Simon once played a chef in a film, and Manuel enjoys wine - that should be plenty of expertise, they reckon. Their upscale establishment in the middle of nowhere is supposed to put everything before it in the shade. Up close, though, it looks more like a prime candidate for a TV show about botched renovations. When the restaurant then burns down, arson starts to seem likely - at least to the village police officer, who seizes on the investigation involving two film stars as her chance to launch a true crime podcast.
The hunt for the arsonist takes Manuel Rubey and Simon Schwarz back into the past, deep into themselves, and toward some fundamental questions: aren't we all a little bit arsonists? In our friendships? At work? In relationships? For the officer, the case is clear anyway: it was Rubey who torched the place. Because the murderer is always the gardener, maybe - but the arsonist is always the Viennese.*
