The Wingfield family refuses to give up, even without a breadwinner. Mother Amanda and her children Laura and Tom each try to steer their modest, work-worn lives toward something better. Each of them retreats into their own dreams: Amanda clings to a vivid past, Tom longs to escape the factory floor and become a writer, and Laura has withdrawn into a sheltered parallel world of her own. The glass cabinet where Laura keeps her collection of figurines - and with which she quite literally lives - gives the play its title.
Yet the harder all three pursue their goals, the more they obstruct and hurt one another - a textbook case of toxic entanglement and intrusive projection. Laura's greatest joy, the titular collection of glass animals, stands as an emblem of how fragile the wish to grow beyond oneself can be - or simply: to remain whole.
