Long, long ago, dragons lived and protected the world from the cold of ice with the warmth of their fire. But over time, ice began to destroy all living things. Arktos, a terrible snowman, seeks to cover the world in ice. The old dragon Tyrion wants to prepare his young son Tabaluga for his destined task - protecting the world. But to do this, Tabaluga must find the True Fire, for only then can he put an end to Arktos's schemes.

Tabaluga receives the aid of a sorcerer and sets out to find the fire. Along the way, he faces many dangers, such as the spider-woman Tarantula, and discovers beautiful things. He learns that the world, with all its good and evil, is wonderful and worthy of being saved. But Arktos wants to prevent Tabaluga from fulfilling his destiny. He creates a beautiful being from pure ice - a girl named Lilli.

Lilli's only task is to distract Tabaluga from his search for the True Fire. Tabaluga falls in love with Lilli, as Arktos planned, but in doing so, he discovers a great and beautiful power - Love.
