Kate Somerset and her younger sister Becky lead a strictly conservative life - watched over by their brother George and the housekeeper Mrs. Brown. When Kate refuses to accompany George to a charity concert, the evening takes an unexpected turn: the charming Ben breaks into their house.

What follows is a tangle of complications, stirred up by the capricious neighbour Kitty Kelchester and Becky's far-too-nosy fellow student Kim. Through it all, Detective Slade must not, under any circumstances, discover what is really going on.
