The First Name (Comedy by Mathieu Delaporte & Alexandre de La Patellière)

A cosy evening at the home of literature professor Pierre Garaud and his wife Elisabeth - just friends and family: Elisabeth's brother Vincent with his pregnant wife Anna, and Claude Gatignol, a trombone player in the radio orchestra and childhood friend.

Vincent, a gifted self-promoter, finds the gathering too peaceful. To liven things up, he reveals to his stunned guests the planned name for his unborn son: Adolphe. The debate over whether one can name a child after Hitler is just one of the heated discussions of the evening - but it sets the cosy family gathering on a slippery slope.

Pierre and Vincent seize the opportunity to finally tell each other a few home truths that would have been better left unsaid in the interest of domestic harmony. Considerable egos clash, verbal sparring matches are conducted with relish and style. The alpha males only completely lose their composure when Elisabeth and Vincent's mother Françoise enters the fray - in a way no one saw coming.

Wordplay and dialogue in the tradition of French drawing-room comedy drive the plot forward, which despite all its humour also allows glimpses into the depths of the characters.
