Dutschke & die 68er - A Musical Revue

A "Reichskabarett"? It actually existed - not under the Nazis, but from 1966 in Berlin, closely connected to the student movement around Rudi Dutschke. The "Reichskabarett Berlin" was directed by Volker Ludwig and located on Ludwigkirchstraße in Wilmersdorf, where it became a meeting point for the extra-parliamentary opposition. In particular, the second program "Bombenstimmung" - a Vietnam revue by the then 22-year-old Frank-Patrick Steckel, featuring contributions from SDS member Detlef Michel - cemented this role.

This connection between Rudi Dutschke and the Reichskabarett frames the musical revue. Students, communards, a Springer journalist, skeptical workers, musicians, and flower power followers come and go, the mood shifts from euphoric to melancholic, while history unfolds outside. The stage becomes a microcosm of a generation: from the awakening of 1966/67, through the murder of Benno Ohnesorg, to the assassination attempt on Dutschke in 1968, and the movement's dissolution. Some enter institutions, some go underground, some retreat to private life - the question of where remains unanswered.
