Büchner & Politics: Danton's Death — BüchnerBühne Riedstadt, Riedstadt

Part of the quarterly theme "Büchner & Politics" - scenic reading and thematic tour

The Idea of Europe - through the lens of "Danton"

Büchner wrote "Danton's Death" in 1835, aged 22, while fleeing the Hessian state prison. The play is not a history piece - it is a philosophy of history, a cry against ideologies that turn human beings into instruments of the system.

The French Revolution was Europe's first great attempt to realise freedom, equality and human dignity through politics. Büchner shows how that attempt devoured its own children.
