Delphine Joussein

Electronics, voice, mouth effects, percussion - all channelled through the transverse flute. What sounds in Delphine Joussein's project Calamity (Unrest) is a wild dialogue between frenzy and self-observation, between organic breath and electric amplification. Solid, live-played riffs form the backbone of a scenario full of twists, driven by an uncompromising will to surprise. The sonic potential here knows no limits.
Far from any angelic flute fantasy, Joussein pushes her instrument to its outermost edges. A 2023 report on the French artist's live set described the energy it generates as a coin tossed into the air - shimmering between two poles. Raw sonic charges are shaped through effects, loops and delays into dense layerings, worked like a malleable sound mass.
Vocal bursts, breath sounds and an arsenal of extended playing techniques collide with abruptly placed, almost elegiac pauses. For moments, the instrument's pastoral past flashes through - only to be steamrolled again by electric force in the next instant. A solo that demands and captivates in equal measure.
