Electronics, voice, mouth effects, percussion - everything flows through the transverse flute. In Delphine Joussein's project Calamity (Unrest), a wild dialogue unfolds between frenzy and self-observation, between organic breath and electrical amplification. Solid, live-played riffs form the backbone of a scenario full of turns, driven by an uncompromising will to surprise.
Far from any angelic flute fantasy, Joussein pushes her instrument to its extreme limits. Raw sound charges are shaped through effects, loops and delays into dense layers - worked like malleable sonic matter. In a 2023 report on a live set by the French artist, the emerging energy was described like a coin tossed into the air: shimmering between two poles.
Vocal thrusts, breath sounds and an arsenal of extended playing techniques meet abruptly placed, almost elegiac pauses. For moments, the pastoral past of the instrument flashes through - only to be overwhelmed by electrical force in the next instant.
