The band's name has an unusual origin: invited by the Chinese Ministry of Culture, five students from the University of Limerick - where Irish folk music is part of the curriculum - travelled to China to perform for St. Patrick's Day. They found the name during a walk along the Bund promenade in Shanghai, starting at house number 3: 3 On The Bund.

The quintet consists of multiple award-winning Irish musicians and Simon Pfisterer from Bavaria, who studied pipes and whistle in Limerick. Their repertoire combines traditional Irish music with original songs and influences from world music. Irish Music Magazine describes their sound as "powerful, energetic and vibrant".
