William Byrd - "Sing joyfully" from Cathedral Music, arranged for string quartet by Stefano Pierini
Erich Wolfgang Korngold - String Quartet No. 2 in E-flat major, op. 26
This concert will be recorded by NDR Kultur!
The opening half presents dance pieces from across music history as a lively, entertaining hosted revue of around fifty minutes.
The shorter second half offers a supposedly "more serious" counterpoint. Once again, a vast span of time - this time from the Renaissance to the 20th century - passes in the blink of an eye. William Byrd's joyfully shimmering "overture" leads with surprising seamlessness into Korngold's brilliant Second String Quartet - the last great child prodigy of Romanticism - and the effect is almost cinematic. The music ranges from winking cheerfulness to Viennese melancholy, and the final movement is, of course, a waltz.
