When the devil enters the game, fairy tales rarely end well. The same holds true for Igor Stravinsky, who lived in Swiss exile at the end of World War I and created this work together with poet C. F. Ramuz. The story of a deserter, a violin, a sick princess, and the devil itself originates from a Russian fairy tale. Since Switzerland too was plagued by hardship (financial) at that time, the composer and author drew inspiration from street performers and ballad singers, crafting a pragmatic concept that requires only a few instruments and actors.

Edvin Revazov, celebrated principal dancer of the Hamburg Ballet, founded the "Hamburger Kammerballett" in 2022 together with Isabelle Rohlfs. A labour of love: it provides an artistic home for young dancers from Ukraine in the Hanseatic city and stands for community and solidarity. Together with the festival ensemble camerata freden and actor Heikko Deutschmann as narrator, the dancers promise audiences in the theatre hall of Gymnasium Alfeld a moving ballet evening full of passion and emotion. As part of the 35th International Freden Music Days 2026, audiences will also experience the jazz ballet "La Revue de Cuisine" by B. Martinu and the Suite for Chamber Orchestra by Erwin Schulhoff, arranged in 2004 for the Freden Music Days for chamber ensemble by Andreas N. Tarkmann.
