Elena Fischer returns to Hamburg with her second novel "Cast a Shadow". In 2023, her debut "Paradise Garden" was nominated for the Harbour Front Literature Festival award.

Joseph lives alone on a farm. His wife left him and moved to the city with their son. He never learned to speak about fear, war, or love. Just as he begins to accept death as the best way out, someone rings the doorbell. Birdie is twenty, exhausted, and fleeing her family. While she recovers on the farm and shares stories of her beloved and her dreams, Joseph confronts truths he has spent his whole life running from.

The novel is set in the 1960s in the countryside and tells how people save each other without knowing it. The jury of the Aspekte Literature Prize wrote about Fischer: "Elena Fischer writes with great linguistic power about the fragility of human relationships." "Paradise Garden" was also nominated for the German Book Prize and has already been translated into 15 languages.
