"Kardinalfehler" is a sharp, provocative comedy that tackles a highly topical subject with wit and genuine reflection - a play that feels very much of its moment. At its core lie serious social issues: the cover-up of secrets, bribery, interlocking power structures, and the threats that come with them.

Thanks to Bishop Konrad Glöckner, a small German diocese - currently preparing for its 700th anniversary celebrations - is regarded in Rome as a model of moral integrity. But just before the Holy Father's visit, an old "cardinal error" shatters Glöckner's perfect ecclesiastical idyll.

It is emphasised that "Kardinalfehler" does not deal with sexual abuse, nor does it cast any aspersions on activities directly connected with religious faith and the duties and services of a clergyman.
