Sunny seems to have made it - she plays music and earns her living from singing. She used to work in a factory; now people want to hear her voice. She is beautiful, and the occasional admirer gets to spend the night, though never for breakfast, while others she has to fend off altogether.
Harry the taxi driver, for instance, is deeply in love with her. Her bandmate Norbert considers himself the right man for her and turns aggressive when she rejects him. Sunny herself falls for the philosopher Ralph, and the band falls apart. Going back to the factory is something the vivid, restless Sunny simply cannot bear, so she keeps fighting for her dream of a life in music.
This celebrated 1980 East German film by Konrad Wolf and Wolfgang Kohlhaase - prominently cast and winner of numerous awards - took its audiences into a Berlin that no longer exists. The stage adaptation brings the familiar story back to life and finds new angles in it, with plenty of music throughout.
