As a summer festival concert celebrating its 60th anniversary, Birnauer Kantorei presents Bach's magnificent cantata "Wir danken dir, Gott, wir danken dir", which rang out in 1731 at the council election in Leipzig - traditionally an occasion to give thanks to God for shared accomplishment and to ask for blessing and good fortune for the future. Three trumpets, timpani, and virtuosic organ solos enhance the orchestra for this festive occasion. Bach later transformed the opening chorus into the "Dona nobis" of his B minor Mass. Alongside it, Haydn's "Nelson Messe" - composed during difficult times ("in angustiis") but dedicated to joyful praise of God and in honour of his patron Nicholas II Esterhazy - completes the programme.
