Description was written before the event

Works for piano four hands by Fanny Hensel, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Franz Schubert and others.

Konstanze Hollitzer & Prof. Christian Hornef, piano duo

In the 19th century, numerous arrangements of major orchestral works for piano four hands were created - partly because orchestras were unavailable, partly because music lovers wanted to play symphonies and overtures at home. Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, for example, initially created a version of his 1st Symphony for piano, violin and cello; the four-hand piano arrangement ultimately proved to be the more practical solution. The expressive possibilities of this instrumentation are considerable: structures become audible in multiple layers, and the timbral colours are enormously varied.

Alongside arrangements, the programme also features original compositions for piano four hands - a repertoire that compositionally extends far beyond two-hand piano literature and makes the close collaboration of two pianists at one instrument particularly tangible.

Konstanze Hollitzer and Prof. Christian Hornef have been working together for many years and perform throughout Germany and Europe.
