The Pavel Haas Quartet enjoys worldwide acclaim for its richness of tone, compelling passion, and intuitive ensemble playing. With performances in the world's most prestigious concert halls and five Gramophone Awards among numerous recording prizes, the quartet ranks firmly among the leading chamber ensembles of our time.
BBC Music Magazine places the ensemble among the ten greatest string quartets of all time, describing it as "stylistically powerful and sonically opulent, known for passionate and fearless interpretations".
After winning the Paolo Borciani Competition in Italy in 2005, further early career milestones included nomination as ECHO Rising Stars in 2007, participation in the BBC New Generation Artists programme from 2007 to 2009, and a special ensemble fellowship from the Borletti-Buitoni Trust in 2010.
The quartet takes its name in memory of the Czech-Jewish composer Pavel Haas [1899-1944], who was interned in the Theresienstadt ghetto in 1941 and murdered in Auschwitz three years later. His legacy includes three outstanding string quartets.
