The character Karl-Konrad places this famous Angela at the centre: he revisits historical events and asks what has become of us Germans - and what has remained.

"The thought of Angela Merkel brings a sense of security." Or does it? A fisherman from Stralsund knew her personally, drank wine with her and laughed - and knows exactly what a funny person Angela is. From the perspective of society's margins, the author lets Karl-Konrad trace the journey of "our country" to the here and now.

In the end, one question lingers beyond any chancellorship: who are we now, and what do we make of it?
